What is a chemical peel facial treatment and how does it work?
Chemical Peels are a technique whereby a chemical solution is applied to the skin in a controlled manner, producing controlled tissue death. They are extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photoaging. The depth of controlled damage depends on the nature and concentration of the chemicals in the peeling solution and the length of time they are permitted to interact with the skin. After the peel, the skin regenerates. The damaged skin likely regenerates through the growth of cells from deeper layers of the epidermis or from undamaged hair follicles. Peels are categorized as superficial, medium, and deep.
Superficial or Progressive Peels
Can be used on all skin types and usually contain a mild or diluted acid. Only the very top layer of the skin is removed (Epidermis). This is ideal for people who want the benefits of a facial peel, but don't want all the downtime or discomfort associated with deeper peels. The solution can contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), like glycolic, lactic, or certain fruit acids, or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), like salicylic acid, or other simple organic acids found in fruits. They can be added to any facial treatment.
Medium or Mid-Depth Peels
These may reach the superficial layer of the dermis and the exfoliation occurs within two to three days after application. Peeling consists of light flaking similar to a sunburn peel. Usually using trichloroacetic acid (TCA), these peels can soak deeper into your skin. This allows the treatment of issues such as sun damage, discoloration, and wrinkles.
Deep Peels
These generally reach the deeper layers of the dermis. The skin becomes brown and crusty then undergoes considerable peeling, which occurs three to four days after application. The skin peels in large segments as opposed to flaking. Deep peels usually use carbolic acid (phenol) or a concentrated, high strength TCA. These are ideal for treating deep lines and wrinkles, scarring, and severe sun damage. Because these peels penetrate so deeply into the skin, they should only be performed by an experienced physician.
Why are pre-peel preparation, post-peel home care, and post-peel facial treatment extremely important?
There are specific instructions to be followed for your skin peel that are as important as the peel itself. A successful skin rejuvenation program does not begin and end in the treatment room; it starts with a pre-conditioning regimen using topical correctives. This is one of the most important steps towards transformation and uses products such as lighteners and brighteners. Post-peel daily home care is essential and is recommended for two weeks after the peel. Post-care will include occlusive healing balms, epidermal growth factor (cell renewal and wound repair), calming, a soothing topical solution to reduce itching and inflammation, and always sunscreen! Post-peel facial treatments with your esthetician are highly recommended and will benefit the chemical peel program for successful results. These treatments will provide support for skin trauma and help to ensure proper healing. Light exfoliating enzymes and efficient hydrating masks are commonly used and followed by essential topical serums to assure proper cell renewal. A pre-consultation and a pre 24-hour skin patch test are required to avoid allergy reaction and to be determined what type of chemical peel would be the best for you.
